Nov 7 - learning inspires career - Tosha Caston-Smith

Nov 7

What new learning has inspired you in your career?

We are on the cusp of a technological rebirth. I don't know what amazing advances we will make, but we are certainly moving in the direction of more open and shared technology. Every time I learn of a new app or program, I try to see how I can use it to deepen learning and understanding in my classroom. It's been helping me keep from going stale (in year 23) since the technology allows completely different ways of communicating with students. Ways that can be more effective than pen and paper, sometimes.

When commenting on kids' English papers now, my suggestions and remarks can show up instantly on their version of the paper. They can even ask questions of me on their papers, and all I have to do is hit reply from my email to answer them. We can have a veritable conversation about their writing just by using and sharing in Google docs. I'm loving it!

Nov. 6 - inspiring qoute Jane Crain

“Life is just a short walk from the cradle to the grave, and it sure behooves us to be kind to one another along the way.” Alice Childress

The older I get, the more I realize that what’s important in life is not the things you have or what you achieve, but how you treat people along the way.  To me that’s what this quote it saying.

Nov 6 – inspiring quote or verse -Stephen Hobbs

A saw this in a pet store one time and it rang so true in my spirit.

"I can only hope to be the kind of person my dog thinks I am."

My dog thinks I am the greatest and loves me regardless of any circumstances.  I can only hope that I can live my life like my dog, and only see the good in those around me.

Nov 6 – inspiring quote or verse Kara Dye

"Be the change you wish to see in the world"  -Gandhi

I have this quote hanging by my desk so that I can look at it every day and be reminded of why I am a teacher. When I get frustrated or upset with this job, I read Gandhi's words and remind myself to try to be a positive spirit in this world.

Inspiring quote - Tosha Caston-Smith

Nov 6

Share a quote or verse that has inspired you and tell us why.

Okay, it's not really a quote, but it's something I've been thinking about for a long time:

Treat each student like someone you love. Be kind, explain your expectations, let them know that their grade does not define how you feel about them. If they know you love them, they will work harder and listen more. Teaching then become a labor of love, instead of just a labor.
